Drones as first responders: Red Deer RCMP to launch new program

Mounties in Alberta are preparing to deploy a new tool that could change how first responders handle unfolding emergencies.

Red Deer RCMP are set to introduce a Drone as First Responder (DFR) program that will see drones dispatched ahead of police, fire, or EMS to get fast eyes on a scene.

The system will allow trained pilots to launch drones directly from the detachment, delivering real‑time video and details to responders. According to RCMP, the goal is to understand situations faster, allocate the right resources, and improve safety for both the public and emergency crews.

Since 2020, RCMP drones have supported search-and-rescue operations, missing-person investigations, major crime scenes, and tactical incidents. The new DFR model expands that capability by enabling immediate deployment.

Members already trained in drone operations will receive additional instruction specific to DFR missions, according to the RCMP.

Officials say the drones will support police, fire, EMS, and municipal enforcement, even responding to fire and medical calls when needed.
