Calgary’s Sikome Lake ready for summer after $6M upgrade

After a $6M makeover, one of Calgary’s favourite summer escapes, Sikome Lake has re-opened for the season with many new upgrades. Henna Saeed reports.

After a $6 million makeover, one of Calgary’s favourite summer escapes, Sikome Lake, has reopened for the season with many new upgrades.

For generations, Sikome Lake has been a summer tradition for Calgary families.

Four years and $6 million later, visitors are diving back into a refreshed beach just in time for the hottest days of the season.

The upgrades include new entry booths, renovated change rooms, an improved concession area, and a brand-new water safety centre with first aid facilities and space for lifesaving equipment.

“I have a two-year-old baby; it was very nice, she likes it. And it’s very clean — water is very clean. It has a very nice scent,” Olga explained.

“Oh my god, we have been waiting for it maybe the whole year.”

But for many spending the day here, it’s less about what’s new and more about getting back to a place that’s become part of their summer routine.

“I’ve been coming here for a bit, and you can see with a lot of families coming here that it seems to be a pretty good investment,” Kyla said.

The artificial lake, located inside Fish Creek Provincial Park, welcomes roughly 100,000 visitors every summer. It’s fed by freshwater wells and treated on site, rather than using water from the Bow River.

While a few finishing touches will continue over the coming weeks, the beach is fully open for the season
