Fraser Institute releases controversial high school rankings

It’s no surprise.  Once again, private schools dominate the annual — and always controversial — rankings of Alberta high schools by the Fraser Institute.

This year, Old Scona in Edmonton retains its Number 1 rating which it shared last year with Rundle College of Calgary.  The Calgary private school falls to Number 2.

Strathcona Tweedsmuir in Okotoks slips one spot to Number 6.

Among local public and separate schools, Sir Winston Churchill tops the list.  It’s rated Number 8, while St. Francis is a distant 37th overall.

At Number 254, James Fowler is the lowest ranked Calgary high school.

The domination of the rankings by private schools has become predictable, as is the response of public and separate school board officials, as well as the Alberta Teachers Association, which take a dim view of the ratings and the methodology used to arrive at the results.
