CPS will have to make do with less

The city tabled its draft budget Wednesday and it’s not good news for the Calgary Police Service, which will face a $12 million cut in the next two years.
Police Chief Rick Hanson says to make up for the short fall, three out of eight district offices will be shut down next year, a decision he had to make in order to keep “beat cops” on the streets.
“Does this impact the number of police officers out on the street? No it does not because we don’t deploy out of offices. Our officers come to work, get into their car and go out to the geographic area they patrol. So at the end of the day when you shut down a district office, you’re making it less convenient because we do like to have the outreach in the community,” says Hanson.
Although Hanson didn’t specify exactly which district offices would be closed, he did say it would be the ones recently built in newer communities.
