Monkees singer Davy Jones dies of heart attack in Florida at 66

INDIANTOWN, Fla. — Actor and musician Davy Jones, who gained fame with the 1960s band The Monkees, has died in Florida. He was 66.

A representative for Jones confirmed that he died Wednesday morning of a heart attack in Indiantown, Fla.

Jones’ former Monkees bandmates Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith all took to Facebook to praise the singer and express condolences to his family.

“I am in a state of shock; Davy and I grew up together and shared in the unique success of what became The Monkees phenomena. The time we worked together and had together is something I’ll never forget. He was the brother I never had and this leaves a gigantic hole in my heart. The memories have and will last a lifetime. My condolences go out to his family.” wrote Dolenz.

“David’s spirit and soul live well in my heart, among all the lovely people, who remember with me the good times, and the healing times, that were created for so many, including us. I have fond memories. I wish him safe travels.” wrote Nesmith.

“”It is with great sadness that I reflect on the sudden passing of my long-time friend and fellow-adventurer, David Jones. His talent will be much missed; his gifts will be with us always. My deepest sympathy to Jessica and the rest of his family. Adios, to the Manchester Cowboy.” wrote Tork.

Before joining The Monkees, Jones was a child actor. He appeared on the British soap opera Coronation Street and on stage in the show “Oliver!”

Jones was chosen for The Monkees in 1965 when American television company Screen Gems was looking for a Beatles type band to make a television series around.

The Monkees became an instant hit with fans and, with songwriters that included Don Kurshiner and Neil Diamond, the group had several hits including “Daydream Believer” and “Last Train to Clarksville.”

They were often criticized in the press over the fact that they did not play their own instruments.

The show was cancelled in 1968 and the Monkees broke up shortly afterwards.

Jones went on to have a solo career but often reunited with his former bandmates for short tours.

In 1989 the band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Jones was born Dec. 30, 1945, in Manchester, England.  He is survived by his wife and four daughters from previous marriages.
