Alberta pledges $1M to explore creation of stand-alone Stollery Children’s Hospital

EDMONTON (CityNews) — The Alberta government is pledging $1 million to explore the possibility of creating a stand-alone Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.
An additional $1 million is being provided by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Those funds will go toward capital planning, needs assessment, cost estimate and a business case.
The goal is to create a larger children’s hospital and care space for children with more beds and better care in Edmonton and the surrounding regions.
“Unlike Calgary or Vancouver, Edmonton does not have a free-standing children’s hospital,” said Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro at a Thursday morning press conference. “AHS will first develop a needs assessment. That assessment will help us determine if children and families will be better served by a bigger, better, brighter children’s hospital dedicated to, and set apart for, children.”
The current 236-bed Stollery Children’s Hospital was built in 2001.
