Calgary man faces 36 charges, 8 firearms seized in bust

A Calgary man is facing 36 charges and had multiple items seized by police after a two-month investigation into his activity.

Officers say the investigation began in December after they believed the suspect was connected to organized crime and drug trafficking in the city.

They confirmed this was happening in two homes.

As a result, police made a traffic stop on the suspect and took him in “without incident” on Jan. 31.

Afterward, investigators say they searched the suspect’s vehicle and homes, which were located on 4 Avenue SW near the Eau Claire area and on 30 Avenue and Rundleside Drive NE.

Multiple handguns were seized, including a Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380 handgun, a loaded Taurus .38 Special handgun, a loaded Ruger .22 handgun with a silencer, and various models of the Glock.

A taser, baton, around 1.8 kilograms of drugs, including cocaine, Fentanyl, Oxycontin, Xanax, and cannabis, and materials used for drug production and packaging were also seized.

Calgary police arrested 24-year-old Thien Luong, and he faces numerous charges in relation to drug trafficking and firearms offences.

The suspect is set to appear in court on Feb. 27.

“In this case, tireless and steadfast investigative work led to the arrest of an individual and the removal of eight unlawful firearms from our streets,” said Acting S.Sgt Mike Sushelnitsky in a statement. “Organized crime, drug trafficking, and the associated violence has no place in our community, and we will continue to target those who are involved.”

Officers say the firearms seized were “unlawfully possessed by the accused” and add they believe seven of the firearms had been smuggled into Canada, and the remaining firearm was allegedly stolen.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the original source of the guns.
