Discovery Ridge has been designated as a “wildlife affected” area due to increasing bear sightings in Calgary.
In a notice on X, Ward 6 Coun. Richard Pootmans says the newly amended Wildlife Waste Bylaw is in effect for the community.

That means there are new rules for where residents can keep their waste bins and when they can be put out for collection.
Calgarians will need to store waste in a garage, shed, or other secure enclosure, which applies to all carts and extra bags of yard waste or tag-a-bag garbage.
In addition, those living in “wildlife affected” areas will be required to limit how much residential waste is left overnight for collection.
The city says waste can be set out no earlier than 5 a.m. on the day of collection, and picked up no later than 7 p.m. on the day of collection.

Bear and cubs euthanized in Calgary’s Griffith Woods Park
“Based on our current of other municipalities, overnight set-out of waste is the most significant attractant of bears and other wildlife,” the city says.
Four bears were captured and euthanized in Calgary’s southwest community of Discovery Ridge in 2022.
Griffith Woods Park was shut down for days due to bear activity. After a month of getting almost daily calls about a black bear sow and three cubs in the area, Alberta Fish and Wildlife said it made the decision to capture and put the animals down on Oct. 28, 2022.
