A downtown Calgary street is set to get a major makeover starting this week.

The city says $30 million is being spent to revitalize 8 Street SW between 2 Avenue and 10 Avenue SW.

An investment from the Canada Community Building Fund is picking up $20.5 million of the tab. The federal fund provides money to support local infrastructure projects like roads, building, public transit, and water treatment systems.

Seven of the nine approved office-to-residential conversions are happening on or near the street, which the city says warrants area upgrades.

Once completed, the city says the street will be a vibrant urban destination and community connector with comfortable and inviting gathering spaces, a more pedestrian-friendly streetscape, and infrastructure for more people walking and wheeling to amenities.

Construction on the project starts Wednesday on the north end of the corridor, near the Bow River Pathway and is expected to continue through early 2027.

Work will be completed in phases and focus on enhancing accessibility and walkability.

According to the city, the design was created using feedback from Calgarians, as well as technical analysis, best practices, and policy.
