Calgary police are investigating a midday armed robbery at a smoke shop in the city’s northwest.
The incident occurred around 12:35 p.m. at the Cowboys Shop on Varsity Drive NW and Shaganappi Trail NW.
According to police, between four and five individuals entered the store and threatened staff with weapons.
Security images appear to show the suspects wielding axes and knives entering the store. Owner Emad Sleiman tells CityNews there were more staff on duty than usual because the store was moving.
Staff members were able to chase the thieves from the store.
No injuries were reported.
“One guy was using the axe to hit the furniture in the store,” says Sleiman. “Nobody was hurt, thank god.”
Officers responded and remain in the area actively searching for the suspects. Police have not released descriptions of the individuals involved or the types of weapons used.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Calgary Police Service.
