Shuttle bus goes up in flames in NW Calgary

A Calgary Transit shuttle bus caught fire Friday morning in the city’s northwest, forcing road closures and creating icy road conditions.

The incident happened just after 8 a.m. on Nose Hill Drive between Stoney Trail and 87 Street NW.

According to the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), the bus driver was the only person on board when smoke and flames were noticed. The driver attempted to extinguish the fire but was forced to abandon the effort as the blaze spread rapidly.

They escaped without injury, according to CFD. Police say one person was assessed at the scene and then taken to hospital as a precaution.

Fire crews responded quickly and managed to put out the flames. However, the large amount of water used to suppress the fire froze on the roadway, leaving the surface dangerously slick.

Nose Hill Drive was closed in the area for several hours. A sanding truck has been dispatched to deal with the ice.

The road reopened around 12:30 p.m.

Commuters are advised to expect delays and detours until the road is reopened. Calgary Transit has not reported any further impacts to service, and officials confirmed no passengers were involved in the incident.
