A young man has been charged following a police shooting at a northwest Calgary CTrain station earlier this week.
Around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Calgary police officers responded to reports of a man armed with a knife acting aggressively toward a peace officer in the Dalhouse LRT Station parking lot.
According to investigators from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the peace officer called 911 after the man approached while the officer was sitting in a vehicle.
Two police officers responded to the scene. One of the officers was armed with a handgun, and the other was armed with a rifle.
Upon arrival, the officers confronted the suspect on a walkway to the CTrain station, leading to an altercation.
The officer with the handgun pointed a taser at the man and asked him to drop the knife and get on the ground, according to ASIRT. The officer fired his taser when the man continued to move towards them, and the other officer fired his rifle immediately after, striking the suspect.
He was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition. No officers or bystanders were injured.
Following an investigation into the suspect’s actions before the shooting, police have charged 23-year-old Cody Duquette with three counts of assaulting a peace officer, one count of possessing a weapon, and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.
Duquette is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
ASIRT has launched an investigation into the shooting. ASIRT is mandated to review all incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death, or an officer discharging their weapon.
