Notre Dame High School slated for renovations

A high school in the city’s north east is getting over $7.6-million in upgrades.

Phase one of renovations at Notre Dame High School will include an addition to the school, with extra CTS labs, classrooms, support areas, a music room and a place to store gym equipment.

The chair of the Calgary Catholic School Board, Seraphino Scarpino tells 660News even though the school is new, the renovations are badly needed.

“This school is actually quite new. I think it was open in about 2005 or so,” he says. “Even then because of the influx of students that we had in the area, we knew already that we were going to be in need of much more space.”

He says Alberta Education put a damper in that plan.

“Alberta Education told us that we had to cut back on our building and we did according to their plans,” Scarpino says. “Unfortunately we came very short when it came to all of our students. We’re now glad that we’re able to meet the needs of all of our students.”

Money for the project comes from the province.

The addition to the school will give students an extra 1,865 square metres of space.

Construction for the project is set to begin next spring and will be complete in time for the 2013-2014 school year.
