Alberta’s unemployment rate falls, while Canada’s rises

Economist are disappointed with the latest employment numbers.
Statistics Canada reports the country lost more than 39-thousand jobs in July, pushing the unemployment rate up a tenth of a point to 7.2 per cent.
Most economists had expected an increase of 10-thousand jobs.
The unemployment rate dropped only in Alberta and New Brunswick.
Actually according to the numbers almost 17-thousand new jobs were created in Wildrose country in July.
The Senior Economist at A.T.B. Financial Todd Hirsch tells 660News the majority of those new positions were created outside of Calgary and Edmonton, with the jobless rate in both cities actually rising.
Calgary’s unemployment rate rose from an even 5 per cent to 5.3 per cent.
Hirsch says despite the rise, Calgary’s job market remains vibrant and healthy even at a time when the energy industry has been quietly shedding several thousand positions over the past year.
He suggests many of the new jobs created are related to flood recovery work in Southern Alberta.
