Commuters will have to wait a little while longer before they get some relief in the southeast.
The new leg of Stoney Trail won’t open Tuesday morning as scheduled.
It’s unclear now when the $769-million dollar project could be finished now, according to Alberta’s Minister of Transportation, it could be another week or two before it’s ready.
Ric McIver is still waiting on a safety audit as well as geometric testing results.
He tells 660News the contractor is very motivated to see this through to completion.
“They want to do a good job for Albertans and there is pretty strong financial incentives in the form of daily penalties in the area of $70,000 for every day it’s late,” he explains.
“We continue to work with the contractor and feel confident that they’re working very hard to get it delivered but it won’t be there on time on October 1st by the looks of it.”
McIver says there have been a lot of variables to contend with, including the weather.
He’s confident commuters will embrace the new highway.
“For me, I just want it open on time or as close to on time as we can,” he says.
