3 dead, 4 injured, Highway 27 closed after crash near Olds

A tragic scene north of Calgary Monday evening.

RCMP say a two vehicle head-on collision happened on Highway 27 between the QEII and Highway 2A.

The lone occupant and driver of an Acura was declared deceased on scene.

A Ford Freestar had six occupants, of which the driver and a rear passenger were also declared dead at the site of the crash.

Adam Loria with Calgary EMS says crews responded around 6:00 p.m.

He says, “it was a very busy scene, yet definitely a coordinated effort by EMS, police and the fire department.  From EMS perspective, the first arriving ambulance was presented with a large number of patients.  Seven to be exact.”

Three people were declared dead on scene.

Three others transported to hospital in critical and potentially life threatening condition, two by air ambulance.

David Fairbanks with Stars Air Ambulance says, “we transported two male patients, in their 20’s, to Foothills Medical Centre and both patients were suffering from critical injuries.”

He says, “it’s very rare that we ever transport two patients, but due to the nature of the incident it was necessary that we transport both of these patients to the hospital.”

One person was taken to Olds Hospital in stable condition.

Fairbanks added Stars support from Edmonton was called in, but bad weather prevented the air resource from traveling south.

Weather and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the collision.

Road surface conditions may have been factors, but police are investigating all possible causes.

A collision re-constructionist from Red Deer attended the scene.

The highway was closed for a good portion of the night.
