Airdrie to host 2020 Alberta Winter Games

The City of Airdrie had been awarded the 2020 Alberta Winter Games.
Alberta Minister of Culture and Tourism Dave Eggen making the announcement Monday at Muriel Clayton Middle School in Airdrie.
Mayor Peter Brown, MLA Angela Pitt and Christi Miller, chair of the bidding committee were also on hand.
Eggen says ‘The Alberta Games are an important step in the lives of our young athletes…promoting sport is a priority for our government and I’m confident Airdrie will do a great job hosting these games.’
The provincial government is chipping in $370,000 to the games through Alberta Sport Connection with over 2,700 participants expected to attend.
ASC Chair John Short says ‘The games will be a great opportunity for Airdrie to showcase its community and we look forward to working with them and welcoming athletes from across the province.’
The games, which feature a variety of events are open to Albertans between the ages of 11 and 17.
It’s estimated the Alberta Games generate an economic impact of about 3 million dollars for host communities.
