Cool and damp start to police half marathon

The pavement is a little wet, but that’s not stopping runners in the 36th Annual Calgary Police Half Marathon.

They got an early start Sunday morning, taking off at 8:15 from the west side of Mount Royal University. It’s the first race of the year for many runners, so the cooler weather shouldn’t be much of a problem.

“People have been training in this type of weather all year, so they’re ready for it,” said Race Director Guy Slater, who is also a superintendent with CPS. “Of course the dress code for the day is very much personal. So you’ll see people with hats and gloves and leggings. And then there’s those who are the stripped down racing pigeons who will be in front of the pack.”

The first ever event attracted 250 participants, but that’s grown to almost 1,500. Proceeds from the event benefit Mount Royal University in the form of about $10,000 dollars worth of scholarships.
