Travel feature: Why you should visit Quebec City

It’s the only fortified city in North America and one of the oldest in Canada.

In our feature celebrating Canada 150, we are checking out historic Quebec City with travel writer Jody Robbins.

“You can hit it any time of year and there’s stuff to see every season,” Robbins explained. “Spring is a good time because they will be tapping the maple trees in March. You can quickly head out of town and get to a sugar shack.”

Quebec City is perfect if you want to just walk and explore.

“There are almost five kilometres of walls, gates and turrets and it looks like you’re in a castle,” she said.

A popular spot to check out is the Ice Hotel (Hotel de Glace).

“It’s a marvel worth seeing,” Robbins said. “It goes on until the mid-end of March and it’s replicated off the original Ice Hotel in Sweden. Even if you don’t stay overnight there, you can still tour around it.”

If you’re a thrill seeker, Quebec City has one of the best tubing parks.

“They’ve got 40 dedicated tube lanes,” she described. “They even have these special inflated rafts, snow rafts, so it’s like you’re white-water rafting on snow.”
