Travel Feature: From Waterton to Cypress Hills

Free park passes for Canada 150 this year are going to make for a busy summer season in Banff National Park.

So where else to go if you want to avoid the crush?

Travel Writer Jody Robbins says you can still get the quaint mountain resort town feel in Waterton, right in the far southwest corner of Alberta.

“A lot of people don’t know it’s the wildflower capital of Canada. They have festival celebrating that and it happens June 15-20,” said Robbins.

“It’s a fun time to go. There’s a lot of photography and painting classes, wildflower identification and even an afternoon tea.”

If Waterton isn’t for you, Robbins suggests, go east to the Cypress Hills.

“It’s actually the highest point between the Rocky Mountains and Labrador.”

“It’s very cool, because you’ve got these Lodgepole Pine forests and rugged mountain-like terrain, and wetland, and grassland.”

There’s even some good options for dining out, including one on the Alberta side of the inter-provincial park; Camp Cookhouse and General Store.

“They preserve old-world cooking techniques, and marry them with what they learned in chef school.”
