Red Deer power slowly restored

Some residents in Red Deer have power restored to their homes, three days after the city was hit by a powerful windstorm.

On Tuesday, Environment Canada issued a Severe Thunderstorm and Wind Warning. The weather system that moved through the south-central Alberta community brought damaging 111 km/hr wind gusts that blew power lines and large trees over, and in some cases into homes and other property. A state of local emergency was declared.

Friday, officials confirmed power was restored to some of the harder hit communities of Vanier Woods, Glendale, Normandeau, and half of Riverside Light Industrial.

Red Deer crews are getting help from the City of Edmonton get facilities in smaller pockets of the city back online.
