CBE officials happy province is addressing racism

The chair of Calgary’s public school board says it’s supportive of the province’s work to address racism and tolerance.

Joy Bowen-Eyre says the Calgary Board of Education established a new safe and caring learning policy a year and a half ago.

“What we do is we define what racism is and we define what faith is, what caring is and it’s something that we’re constantly striving for, recognizing that there is issues out there within the public,” she said.

While she cannot address a recent incident in which a Muslim boy in the public school system was allegedly beaten up on a school bus, she says they take all incidents of racism and bullying seriously and kids are urged to come forward to get help.

With 120,000 students in the public board, she says they know racism, intolerance and bullying exists in their schools, but she can’t say how often it’s happening.
