CALGARY – Crown prosecutors are asking for no chance of parole for at least 17 years as the sentencing for Nelson Lugela continues.
Lugela, 21, was convicted earlier this year of shooting Calgary Stampeders player Mylan Hicks outside Calgary’s Marquee Beer Market in 2016.
The trial heard that several Stampeders, including 23-year-old Hicks, a player on the team’s practice roster, had been celebrating a victory over Winnipeg just hours earlier.
A disagreement over a spilled drink in the bar intensified after closing time in the parking lot.
Witnesses testified that after some pushing and shoving, a person who appeared to be holding a handgun opened fire at Hicks as he was running for cover.
Hicks’ mother says she’s angry her son survived the crime-filled streets of Detroit only to have his life cut short in Canada.
Renee Hill spoke at the sentencing hearing of Nelson Lugela, who was earlier convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Mylan Hicks.
Hill says her son was a good and righteous man who followed his football dream north of the border after being cut by the San Francisco 49ers.
She says it makes her sick that Lugela killed her boy and that other people in the United States are angry too.
Lugela is to be sentenced next Wednesday.
