Flames fan marking 40 years as season ticket holder

CALGARY – The Calgary Flames will soon drop the puck on another season, and a longtime fan can’t wait.

Fred Dick has been a season ticket holder for 40 years since the Flames jumped from Atlanta to Calgary in 1980.

“I immediately went and applied for tickets,” recalled Dick. “I was able to buy a package A and package B. Package A, I stood behind the railing at the Corral and package B, I sat so I was able to go to every game.”

Dick admits he hasn’t been able to attend every single game but averages around a dozen per season.

He said it’s hard to imagine he’s enjoyed watching the team for this long.

“I was just so excited to have a team in Calgary. It goes so fast; the years went by.”

In the 40 years of cheering for the Flames, Dick and his wife Barb have seen many historical moments and hall of fame players. He recounts some of his best memories, including the 1989 Stanley Cup win.

“We should have won it once more, and we think we did, but it wasn’t recognized as a goal. It was too bad. The years with Iginla here. Kiprusoff and Iginla, they were so exciting to watch.”

Calgary will face the Colorado Avalanche in the season opener Thursday night before taking on the Canucks in Saturday’s home opener.

Dick will once again be in the stands and said he’s excited about this year’s team.

“We had such a good year last year; we got the points. I think they have experience now. I think we have wonderful coaching and really good management. I’m really optimistic about this year.”

Dick said, without a doubt, he’ll be back for year 41 next season.

Vegas currently has the Calgary Flames at 20/1 odds of winning the Stanley Cup in 2020 with Tampa Bay having the best odds at 6/1.
