CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Town of Cochrane and Rocky View County have slapped on fire bans, after a couple of recent grass fires.
In Calgary, there is no ban yet.
The Calgary fire department’s Carol Henke says compared to last year, we’ve been late to dry out. There were 30 grass fires in the city in April 2019.
Still, she says we need to use caution because of dry, windy conditions.
“It starts small, but if we have a strong wind and wind gusts, it can grow and travel very very quickly, and all of a sudden people’s homes are threatened,” says Henke.
She advises you also do some spring cleaning to get rid of anything flammable within 30 feet of your home, like dead branches or tall grass.
“We know that in the city, the most common reason we see grass fires is the improper disposal of smoking materials. It’s also the most common reason we see any outdoor fire, be it in someone’s yard, on their porch, on their back deck. ”
Make sure all your clippings are put in your green bin so they can be properly composted and aren’t fuel for a fire in and around your home.
