University of Calgary Students’ Union holding month-long food drive

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Many post-secondary students are having a tough time finding work through the pandemic and now that they’re taking classes again, things are tougher.

So, in an effort to help struggling students, the University of Calgary Students’ Union has launched a month-long food drive to help.

The food bank closed over the summer due to COVID-19 but reopened in September.

Now they’re looking to the community to help restock the shelves.

“A lot of students on our annual survey said they were looking for employment and couldn’t get it,” said Assad Ali Bik with the students’ union.
“We are expecting higher tuition. It’s a plethora of financial instabilities that are occurring.”

From now until the end of the month, the students’ union will be sharing ideas on social media on what you can do to help the food bank.

Ali Bik said any form of support is appreciated.

“One dollar, one can of food, or 100, it doesn’t matter.”

The campus food bank provides seven-day hampers to students and other members of the campus.

In a typical month, it gives out 55 to 70 hampers but the food bank believes that number will be a lot higher this year.

“That’s why we want to be supporting them through this campus food bank because if everything else is tough on them, maybe we can alleviate that by bringing some food if that’s what they need,” said Ali Bik.

For those who can help, non-perishable food donations can be dropped off at the information centre in the MacEwan student centre or contact the students’ union.
