VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The story of the two Michaels detained in China for over two years has inspired a B.C. woman to pay tribute to them through song.
Patricia Burnett lives on the Sunshine Coast and says the more she learned about Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor — the more she wanted to raise awareness.
She says it also reminded her of her own family history.
“I grew up with the stories of them struggling in Russia, and different things that they went through,” she says.
“They should not be there. I was drawn to the story. It overwhelmed me with emotion about these two men and their families, thinking about how they could be without their families… so I really took it on myself to research and find out more.”
Burnett says she considers the song a letter to the two Michaels from Canada.
“A lot of people don’t think they can do anything, and I think everybody has a gift to do something. And my gift is writing and my music,” she says.
She insists that any money made off the song will not go to her. Instead, she says she wants to get in touch with Kovrig’s wife and arrange a donation to charity.
“One person might not be able to bring them home, but maybe a lot of people standing together can at least make the message heard a little bit more.”
Kovrig and Spavor have been jailed in China since December 10, 2018. Their detention came just days after Huawei executive Men Whanzou was arrested at YVR.
