New 40km/h speed limit goes into effect in Calgary neighbourhoods next week

CALGARY – Calgarians will soon be restricted to going 40 kilometres an hour when driving through residential areas.

The lowered default speed limit goes into effect on May 31.

Calgary’s city council voted in favour of the change earlier this year.

“We have a responsibility to make our city safer. This is a small step. Let’s make it,” said Councillor Druh Farrell said at the time.

“I know you probably don’t want to hear it, but we’ve heard time and again that this will save money and it will save lives. Injuries and deaths on our city’s streets are expensive.”

The changed limit will impact residential streets and collector roads.

There will not be any changes to speed limits on major thoroughfares like Deerfoot Trail, Bow trail, Anderson Road, Memorial Drive, or playground zones.
