WATER VALLEY, Alta. – One person is dead after what’s believed to be a bear attack northwest of Calgary.
Alberta Fish and Wildlife says in a Facebook post Mounties were called about the attack on private land near Water Valley, just off Highway 22, around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
Officials say the person had gone for a walk on their property and was found dead on one of the trails.
Traps have been set up in the area and a grizzly was seen with her cub in the vicinity.
The bear was exhibiting aggressive behaviour.
“It is extremely important for residents in the Water Valley area to take precautions and be vigilant when they are outside, even on their own properties. If spending time outside, we recommend bringing deterrents, such as bear spray, and travelling in groups,” said Fish and Wildlife in a statement.
If you encounter a bear, officials say not to run, stay calm, and slowly back away.
Fish and Wildlife also says to carry bear spray if you’ll be in an area where bears are expected to be.
Less than a month ago, a University of Calgary professor was killed by a bear near his home in Waiparous.
