The SHE CAN PLAY Girls Tennis & Leadership Program launches this fall in Calgary, and it will be led entirely by women, from coaches to mentors.
“Its main priority is to attract new girls to the sport of tennis and to retain those who are currently involved,” Danny Da Costa, CEO of the ATC, recently told 660 NEWS.
“It’s always in the back of our mind because we see girls in sports dropping out at alarming rates, even pre-pandemic. It’s one in three girls drops out before the age of 16.
“We have a very successful program here at the Alberta Tennis Centre, and if you look at our numbers, about 60 per cent of all of the kids involved in our program, which is over 600 kids, are female. So we’ve been successful in keeping girls in sports and introducing tennis to the female population, but we have to retain them as well.”
