Calgary City Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra is being investigated by police following a road rage incident earlier this month.
After CityNews confirmed with the Calgary Police Service on Monday that Carra was involved in an incident involving two members of the public, the Ward 9 City Councillor took to Twitter to provide some clarity.
“On April 2, a driver ran through a stop sign while I was in the crosswalk, nearly hitting my dog Izzy and me. I had to pull Izzy out from under the wheels by her leash,” Carra said in the post.
“They were so close I was able to tap the bumper with my foot as they sped by. The driver then stopped, reversed back to me, and the two occupants left their vehicle and began verbally accosting me.”
Carra says that’s when the driver became increasingly verbally irate, and when Carra attempted to stand his ground, it escalated to what he says became physical assault.

Carra says Calgary police attended the incident and took statements from both parties.
CPS says the investigation has been handed to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) in the interest of transparency.
The Calgary Police Commission released a statement on Monday that says Carra is also voluntarily stepping back from his role on the Commission while he addresses a personal matter.
“His position is currently being held for him, but he will not be participating in any meetings or able to access any confidential Commission information until the matter is resolved,” the statement reads.
“As an elected City Councillor and sitting member of the Calgary Police Commission, I support measures that maintain impartiality – for my protection and the driver and passenger involved – and I believe it’s completely appropriate that I recuse myself from Commission until this matter is resolved,” said Carra.
The Ward 9 Councillor says he has always been an advocate for pedestrian and cyclist safety and while he is saddened by the way he was personally impacted by a driver’s anger and disregard for pedestrian safety, “this incident has only reaffirmed my strong prioritization of safe streets across our communities.”
