Family of Calgary mother, Angela McKenzie, releases sincere statement on her death

The family of an innocent victim killed in a collision in Forest Lawn this week says there are no words to express the pain they are feeling.

Forty-year-old Angela McKenzie was killed earlier this week when her van was hit by a truck that was involved in a car chase and shooting with another vehicle.

The single mother-of-five was an innocent victim — killed on Tuesday night — in the aftermath of a car chase involving gunfire between two parties. It ended with a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of 17th Avenue and 36th street southeast.

In a statement from the family this afternoon, they say this senseless tragedy has had a life-altering impact on our lives.

“Angela was taken from this earth far before her time by a senseless act of violence in which she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and as a result of this heinous incident, there are five children who now have to live the rest of their lives with the pain of losing both of their parents in a three month period. Those responsible have yet to be held accountable for their vile acts and reckless disregard for the safety of the general public,” said the Shaw family.

They added they are humbled by the outpouring of support from the community, including a Go Fund Me set up by an uncle.

It has raised more than $100,000 so far.

McKenzie left behind five children, between the ages of 9 and 17. Back in February, they lost their father to an illness.

“This tragedy has brought us together as a family as we strive to process our grief and heartbreak. And while these wounds are still fresh, we are comforted in knowing that we are blessed by the legacy Angela and Tyrel left behind in their young family. Angela’s heart was for her family and especially her children, so as we mourn Angela and honour her legacy by surrounding the children with love, we ask for everyone to respect the privacy of the children and our family during this difficult time.”

They say the money will be used to directly support their children for their immediate needs and then to set up a trust for their future benefit.
