Calgary man faces sexual assault charges shortly after release

Calgary police have laid charges against a man for sexual assault just days after they warned the public of his release from prison.

Officers say they were called to the Forest Heights area on Sept. 29 at around 7 a.m. for reports of a break-and-enter and sexual assault.

The suspect, 23-year-old Paul Algino Barrett, is alleged to have forced his way into a home, where investigators say he sexually assaulted the victim while brandishing a weapon.

Police say he then fled the scene but was arrested later that day just before 9 p.m.

The man has been charged with one count of break-and-enter to commit sexual assault with a weapon, and one count of break-and-enter to commit theft.

“Violent and traumatizing crimes like this one have no place in Calgary communities. Our focus was to work swiftly to identify the person responsible, and to ensure the victim was properly supported during this difficult time,” said S Sgt. Michelle Doyle.

Barrett was released on Sept. 21 after serving two years for break-and-enter with intent, which came with a warning to the public as officers said he was likely to “re-offend.”

Officers issued warrants shortly after for breaching his court-ordered curfew.
