The founder of a fan-favourite Calgary restaurant has died.
Nick Petros, who started Nick’s Steakhouse near the University of Calgary and McMahon Stadium, in 1979, died Sunday.
He was 87 years old.
The restaurateur’s passing was announced on social media on Sunday.
“With heavy hearts, we wish to announce the passing of our patriarch, Nick Petros,” a Facebook post on the restaurant’s page reads. “Our family appreciates your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
“Eat a delicious meal, have a glass of fine red wine, and toast to the one and only, Nick Petros.”
Born in Greece, Petros came to Canada at 17, leaving behind his entire family.
He spent years in the restaurant industry before he founded Nick’s Steakhouse & Pizza, the restaurant’s website says.
“With a collection of his mother’s homemade recipes combined with 25 years of on-the-job training, Nick knew his restaurant would be a success,” it continued. “To this day, he still greets each and every customer as though they were a guest in his own home — and his genuine, vivacious personality make him a hit with his valued customers.”
Petros’ son and his wife bought the business in 2000, though they say Nick never truly retired.
