Calgary police lay several charges in restaurant break-ins

Calgary police say two men are are facing several charges in connection to a series of restaurant break-ins.

Between Friday, Nov. 3 and Tuesday, Dec. 5, police identified up to 17 break-and-enters that they believed to be connected.

Investigators say a majority of the alleged crimes targeted restaurants downtown, in Chinatown, along Edmonton Trail, and on 16 Avenue NW.

Officers say the same two men were working together to commit the break and enters and engaged the Prolific Offender Engagement Team (POET) to track them down.

On Tuesday, Dec. 5, officers found the suspects they’d identified walking in the Manchester area and arrested them.

Bruce Richard Bougie was charged with six counts of break and enter, as well as one outstanding warrant.

The 49-year-old is set to appear in court on Tuesday.

Kyle Donald Sterma was charged with 10 counts of break and enter, and three outstanding warrants.

The 52-year-old was also set to be in court on Tuesday.

“Our Prolific Offender Engagement Team monitors approximately 120 offenders in Calgary,” Acting Sgt. Laura Wilson of the Calgary Police Service Prolific Offender Engagement Team said in a statement. “By dedicating resources to monitor our most prolific offenders and working closely with patrol officers, we can more quickly identify crimes these offenders may have involvement in.”

Police say the investigation into the series of break and enters continues and more charges are expected to be laid.
