Indigenous artisans and local performers of the Tsuutin’a Nation put together a wide display of local products and performed live at the third annual Christmas on the Nation Holiday Market in Calgary.

More than 186 Indigenous artists and local vendors took part this year in partnership between the 7 Chiefs Sportsplex and Chief Jim Starlight Centre, and Taza at the Tsuutina Indigenous Reserve.

“We have a Treaty 7 people, but we also have people that have travelled as far as Edmonton, Lethbridge, Cardston, Saskatchewan, and B.C. to be here as well, so lots of great Indigenous products,” Corinne Wilkinson, event planner for the market, told CityNews.

“It’s not a closed market, it’s open to other vendors as well, but 90 per cent of it is Indigenous market,”

This unique holiday market showcases the work of local artists, offering all kinds of paintings, carvings, beadwork, clothing and more.

Diana is a local metis artist who sells “reconcili-action” products, which are meant to teach non-Indigenous people about how they can take action to reconcile, to bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

“People seem to be caring more and more about helping to make things better for Indigenous people,” said Diana Frost ‘Natoh Yinhsin,’ CEO of Colouring it Forward.

“I’m really seeing a big improvement.”

It’s a festive indoor holiday to appreciate Indigenous crafts and to enjoy live performances by members of the Tsuutin’a Nation, art, food, storytelling, as well as a visit with Santa and other holiday characters.

“It’s amazing actually I have seen so many unique things this booth in particular has Reese with antlers on it and some of the best products I’ve seen at a market,” said one shopper.

The event runs until Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with free entry for kids under 12.
