Calgary Transit is increasing enforcement in a move to crack down on CTrain commuters who have been enjoying free rides.

The transit agency says its focus has been on transit safety for the past couple of years, and now the focus is shifting to ensure all riders are paying their fair share.

“This just started this week and we’re starting with an information educational component,” says Calgary Transit deputy chief Marcia Gonder. “We want to ensure Calgarians know how much the violation ticket is, know where they need to pay, when they need to pay.”

Anyone who cannot show a valid transfer fare upon request is subject to a $250 fine.

Gonder says the stepped up enforcement will continue over the next month and riders can expect to see more peace officers who will be writing tickets for those who avoid fare payment.

The revenue generated from fare payment goes directly to maintaining cleanliness and overall maintenance, according to Calgary Transit.
