Police have charged five adults and two youths following a targeted retail theft operation at a Calgary mall earlier this month.
Calgary police say they started working with the Retail Council of Canada and security team to develop a co-ordinated response to a surge in retail theft.
The response includes sharing intelligence of known offenders, encouraging timely reporting of incidents, and promoting crime prevention strategies.
Officers conducted targeted enforcement at CF Chinook Centre between May 13 and May 15 in an effort to identify suspects.
Police charged five adults, between the ages of 44 and 21, and two youths as a result of the investigation.
Calgary police say they’ve received 142 calls related to theft and five related to robbery so far in 2025. In addition, CPS has received 3,273 reports through their online reporting system.
“Retail crime may seem like a victimless offence, but it has real consequences for our community,” says Insp. Travis Juska. “It affects business owners, employees and our city’s overall sense of safety.”
All retailers are being urged to invest in theft deterrence and report all retail thefts to Calgary police.
