What’s open and closed on New Year’s Day in Calgary

After a night of celebrations and sendoffs for 2024, Calgarians will see the city wind down as many services will be closed.

However, some facilities will be open, including several malls and some city recreation centres.

Here’s what’s open and closed on New Year’s Day 2025.

Calgary Transit, road closures and parking

Calgary Transit says on the first day of 2025, all buses and CTrains will operate on Sunday service.

Parking is free in on-street ParkPlus zones on New Year’s Day.

However, Memorial Dr. NW, going east and west from 10 Street to 4 Street NE, will be closed from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2024, to 2 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2025.

The city says there will be a “no-stopping zone” on Crescent Road N.W. between 7A Street and Centre A Street NW from 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to 2 a.m. on New Year’s Day for pedestrian and traffic safety.

The 4 Avenue flyover remains reduced to a single lane, while Mission Bridge is closed completely for repairs.

Government, bank, and postal services

All are closed on Jan. 1, 2025.

Calgary malls

The Core Shopping Centre and Southcentre Mall will be closed on New Year’s Day, but several others will be open.

CrossIron Mills and Sunridge Mall are open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while Marlborough Mall closes at 5 p.m.

Market Mall and Chinook Centre are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

City facilities

The following facilities will be closed from Dec. 23 until Jan. 1.

  • Acadia Aquatic & Fitness Centre (9009 Fairmount Dr. S.E.)
  • Foothills Aquatic Centre (2915 24 Ave. N.W.)
  • Glenmore Aquatic Centre (5330 19 St. S.W.)
  • Inglewood Aquatic Centre (1527 17 Ave. S.E.)
  • Shouldice Aquatic Centre (5303 Bowness Rd. N.W.)

However, the following facilities will be open on New Year’s Eve from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will be closed on Jan. 1.

Calgary’s Southland Leisure Centre and Village Square Leisure Centre will be open on Dec. 31 from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., all while being closed on Jan. 1. The city says the pool opens at 10 a.m.

Calgary Soccer Centre, and North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Art centres will be closed until Jan. 1 and Jan. 2 respectively.

There won’t be any cart pickups on New Year’s Day on Wednesday. Instead, the carts were collected on Monday. Only Wednesday’s blue, black and/or green cart collection saw changes. All other households will have their regular pick-up on their usual day.

Lastly, landfill and Eco Centre locations will be closed on New Year’s Day.
