‘Boom Baby’ pilots partnership between theatre and Mount Royal University

I’ts a tale as old as time, kind of.

“Boom Baby,” playing at the Pumphouse Theatre from Feb. 28 to March 8, tells the story of a Maritimer coming out west to work in a mine and then finds herself accidentally pregnant.

As she tries to decide what will come next for her and her unborn child, she meets a couple who works in management and can’t conceive. They offer to adopt her child, and help her financially. The play goes on to question the nature of motherhood, what it means to choose your path, and what money can truly buy.

Natalie Meisner is the award-winning playwright of “Boom Baby,” and also a professor at Mount Royal University (MRU).

The MRU theatre arts program was scrubbed in 2013 because of budget concerns, but the skills fostered in that program are still being taught at the university in a variety of classes, some of which she teaches.

The university has formed a partnership with Sage Theatre for the production, which is providing a practicum-type experience for students to gain hands on experience with the production.

Meisner said the experience is being catered to each student. One student working in digital design made the program, another studying public relations is conducting an audience survey to collect statistics, and another that studies music is helping run the sound board.

“It’s been really great to get back into some of those theatres that have been dark since the theatre program closed… we can’t always do it the way we used to do it in the past but it is very, very hopeful as a theatre professional and as a prof to see these young artists hustling like ‘how can I get the skills that I need?'” she said.

The presenting partners of “Boom Baby have shared promo codes for International Women’s Day to ensure everyone that wants to see the show can afford to do so.

Tickets are originally $15, however, code FRIENDS2425 makes the ticket $5, and code AFFORDABLE2425 makes the ticket $10.
