A devastating fire in the Calgary community of Falconridge community claims the life of one and sends another to hospital. Carlene Sorensen reports on what they know so far.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is on scene of a fatal house fire in the northeast Monday morning.

Fire crews, police, and EMS responded to the scene, a single-family home at 75 Falwood Place NE, around 4:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found visible smoke and fire, and were informed there were still people inside.

Crews brought the blaze under control and located three people and two dogs.

According to CFD, a man and two dogs had safely self-evacuated and were treated by paramedics.

The other two residents, a man and a woman in their 60s, had to be rescued by firefighters.

The fire department says the woman was in serious condition and taken to hospital, while the man was in cardiac arrest.

Paramedics attempted to perform CPR, but the man succumed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crews reported just before 6 a.m. that fire fighting efforts continued with salvage and overhaul to make sure the fire is completely put out and there is no risk of spread to neighbouring homes.

CFD says the home is likely a complete loss.

“It looks like the fire started on the inside of the house in the bedroom,” said Carole Henke with CFD. “We don’t know if there were working smoke alarms in the home.

    “It’s so tragic.”

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Authorities don’t believe it was suspicious or criminal in nature.
