11 illegal guns among items seized in Calgary drug trafficking investigation

By CityNews Staff

An investigation that started when police believed a man wasn’t following his bail conditions has now led to the seizure of nearly a dozen guns and thousands of dollars worth of drugs, police say.

The Calgary Police Service Gun Enforcement Team was made aware of a man they thought was in possession of guns and participating in drug trafficking, violating his court-imposed conditions back in January.

An investigation began and police identified several other people associated with the man involved in ongoing criminal activity.

On March 18, officers from various units searched four home in northeast Calgary and Airdrie. Police also searched four vehicles they believed to be connected to the suspects.

Following the searches, four men were arrested; two of them were charged and two were released without charges.

The first suspect, 33-year-old Amanullah Khan is charged with 11 counts of unsafe storage of a firearm, 11 counts of possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and five counts of breach of a release order.

Police seized numerous items in connection to Khan: 10 electronic devices, including cellphones and computers, an estimated $48,000 of methamphetamine, $22,410 worth of cocaine, $2,550 of crack cocaine, $140 worth of oxycodone, and 13 unknown pills.

Officers also found 234 live rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition and 11 illegal guns.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

The second suspect, 22-year-old Mohamed Nadjib Medjadj, is charged with five counts of breach of a release order, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and proceeds of crime.

Officers seized digital scales, drug packaging materials, a small amount of methamphetamine, a small amount of crack cocaine, and some cash during the investigation into Medjadj.

He has been released from custody and is set to appear in court on April 11.

An additional $5,610 in Canadian currency was also seized as part of the investigation.
