SE Calgary crash leaves motorcyclist in life-threatening condition

By CityNews Staff

A motorcyclist is recovering in hospital after crashing in southeast Calgary early Tuesday morning.

Calgary police say it happened just before 1 a.m. on eastbound Stoney Trail from Cranston Boulevard on the off-ramp for northbound Deerfoot Trail in the southeast.

Investigators believe a black 2009 Harley Davidson FXDB, driven by a 39-year-old man, was travelling east on the Stoney Trail on-ramp heading towards northbound Deerfoot Trail SE, when it veered into the travel lanes of a second on-ramp from Cranston Boulevard SE.

As the motorcycle entered the travel lanes of the second on-ramp, police say it started to slide on its side. The rider fell off the bike and hit a guardrail.

Police say there were multiple witnesses to the incident.

The driver was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Officials continue to investigate the incident but say drugs and alcohol aren’t considered to be factors.

Police are investigating whether excessive speed was a factor.
