The City of Airdrie, just north of Calgary, is upgrading its wastewater system to help the city meet growing infrastructure demands.

This will happen with help from the Province of Alberta, which will pump $50 million into the project.

Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown says he’s grateful for the largest provincial funding commitment the city has ever seen.

CLIP: This pipeline is not going to have oil and gas but it will have other liquids in it which are also important to Albertans.

“The projected economic return over the lifeline of this pipe is $45 billion,” he said Wednesday. “That’s not just municipal, that’s across the province; the opportunities are going to be great in our future.”

Alberta Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreeshen, was in Airdrie to make the announcement.

He said now the funding is in place, engineers can get started on the design work.

“This $114 million project will include a new seven kilometer pipeline that will go towards Calgary, which treats Airdrie’s wastewater under a regional agreement that has been signed for many many years.,” Dreeshen explained.

Shovel should hit the ground in 2026 and the expected completion date for the project is 2027.
