Motorcyclist charged after fleeing officer, leading cops on chase through Calgary

A man is facing several charges including flight from a police officer after a failed traffic stop resulted in a dramatic police chase in Calgary Thursday morning.

A motorcyclist is facing charges after he allegedly led police on a chase through Calgary on Thursday after fleeing a traffic stop.

Calgary police say the incident began when an officer saw a motorcycle without a licence plate heading west on 17 Avenue SE near 31 Street SE around 11:10 a.m.

The officer tried to pull over the motorcyclist before he allegedly drove onto a sidewalk and along a pathway that went into a park.

The motorcyclist eventually returned to the roads and drove north through the city. Police say he travelled at high speeds and ignored several traffic lights and signals.

Officers made more attempts to stop him, but weren’t able to.

It is further alleged that the motorcycle continued north out of Calgary at speeds of up to 200 km/h. The suspect eventually came to a stop on Range Road 23 north of Highway 772, near the hamlet of Madden.

The motorcyclist ran away on foot, and Calgary police officers were able to track him with help from the RCMP. He was arrested around noon, nearly an hour after police tried to pull him over.

Police say 33-year-old Calgary resident Joshua Daniel Poirier is facing eight charges, including fleeing police, dangerous driving, and driving without a licence. He will appear in a Calgary courtroom on Monday.

Anyone with further information about the incident is urged to call police at 403-266-1234 or submit tips to CrimeStoppers anonymously.
