Pedestrian dies in SW Calgary crash; third in 24 hours

A woman in her 80s was struck by a vehicle and killed in Calgary’s southwest on Thursday evening, marking the third pedestrian death in 24 hours.

On Wednesday night, a man in his 40s was hit and killed by a van in Forest Lawn. Thursday morning saw the death of a woman in her 70s after she was struck by a F150 truck driven by a man in his 20s. The driver initially fled the scene but turned himself in hours later.

“Over the last 24 hours, three people have lost their lives in collisions that are entirely preventable,” said Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit. “This is a trend we cannot allow to continue. We have entered a season with shorter daylight hours, and it is more important than ever to stay alert and adjust our habits, regardless of your mode of travel.

“Please drive according to road conditions, respect posted speed limits, and be on the lookout for both pedestrians and vehicles alike, especially near intersections.”

Thursday night’s collision happened around 8:35 p.m. at the intersection of Woodpark Blvd SW and 117 Avenue SW in the community of Woodbine.

Calgary police say the elderly woman was crossing the intersection when she was hit by a 2016 Subaru BRZ, driven by a 20-year-old man, which was travelling northbound on Woodpark Boulevard SW.

The woman died at the scene. The driver wasn’t injured and remained at the scene.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the collision. However, speed is being investigated as a factor.

Multiple area roads were closed for several hours for an investigation. They have since reopened to the public.

Thursday’s incident marks the 30th fatal collision of 2025, passing last year’s 10-year high.

It is also Calgary’s 11th fatal collision involving a pedestrian this year.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234 or tipping anonymously through CrimeStoppers.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month in the Alberta Traffic Safety calendar.
