Woman loses tooth after RCMP cell takedown; ASIRT investigating

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a woman in custody lost a tooth in an altercation with an RCMP officer last month.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says RCMP officers in Gleichen, around 80 kilometres east of Calgary, arrested a woman for mischief on the evening of Oct. 30.

At the time of her arrest, she had blood on her face and told officers she had been beaten. Police advised her that paramedics would be called.

The woman was transported to the detachment, where she again requested an ambulance and was told one had been dispatched.

While being placed in a cell, still handcuffed behind her back, an officer repeatedly ordered her to remove her shoes. The woman swore at the officer and again asked for medical assistance.

When she turned away, the officer grabbed her arm and kicked her legs out, causing her to fall face-first to the ground, according to ASIRT.

EMS arrived shortly afterward. The woman sustained a cut to her upper lip and lost a tooth.

ASIRT will examine the officer’s use of force. No further details will be released while the investigation is underway.

ASIRT investigates any police interaction that results in serious injury, death, or allegations of police misconduct.
