3 Calgarians named to Canada’s 2026 Olympic long track speed skating team

Team Canada announces the long track speed skaters who will represent our nation in Italy at the 2026 Winter Games. Rayn Rashid talks to a first-time Olympian from Calgary on his journey to games.

Three Calgarians have been named to Canada’s Olympic long track speed skating team.

Brooklyn McDougall, Ted-Jan Bloeman, and Anders Johnson have been named to the team that will travel to Milano Cortina for the 2026 games.

The games run Feb. 6 to 22.

Bloeman will be appearing at his third Olympics.

In 2018, he won silver in the 5,000 metre and gold in the 10,000 metre.

At Beijing 2022, he failed to reach the podium in the three events he skated in.

Born in the Netherlands, Bloeman joined the Canadian national team for the 2014-15 season after skating in the highly competitive Dutch system for eight years.

This will be the second games for 27-year-old McDougall. At her Games debut in Beijing 2022, she placed 22nd in the 500 metres.

She graduated from the University of Calgary in June 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. After she retires from speed skating, McDougall plans to pursue a Masters of Management.

The athlete is also an artist; she was commission by the Olympic Museum to create three original pieces that were displayed at Paris 2024 and now live in the museum’s Lausanne collection.

Johnson, 28, will compete on the Olympic stage for the first time at Milano Cortina 2026.

He has been successful at international competition, winning gold at the 2024 ISU World Single Distances Championships, setting a world record at the time.

Johnson grew up playing hockey and switched to speed skating at age 17 after moving to Edmonton.
