Calgary police say a man who was run over by a vehicle while lying on a roadway in the city’s Beltline neighbourhood has died.

Investigators say on Sunday around 8:20 p.m. a man, who has yet to be identified, crossed 16 Avenue near 8 Street SW from Tompkins Park.

Before reaching the curb, the man fell or laid down on the roadway in front of a parked Nissan Rogue.

Several minutes later, according to police, the driver returned to their vehicle, started the engine, and pulled out from the parking spot, driving over the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital where he died.

An autopsy is being conducted by the medical examiner to determine whether the man died from injuries sustained during the incident.

The driver, a man in his 50s, stayed at the scene and wasn’t hurt.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
