Strong, damaging winds are expected to whip through parts of Alberta starting Thursday, according to a special weather alert from Environment Canada.
The notice says parts of the province in the central, eastern, and southeastern regions will see “potentially damaging” winds develop for the next few days, with gusts reaching 80-100 kilometres per hour.
“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is likely. Prepare for some disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities,” the notice reads.
“Driving conditions will likely be very difficult. High-sided vehicles could be overturned by the wind. Secure loose objects. If outside, protect yourself from flying or falling debris.”
The map covers large parts of the province, including the Edmonton city region, Rocky View County, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, and Wetaskiwin. Calgary and Lethbridge fall outside the affected areas, but are close enough to see some impact.
Additionally, rain is expected with the lower temperatures. Around 30 millimetres of rain is possible on Friday.
Environment Canada says the winds are expected to weaken by the end of Thursday.
